Queen Elizabeth II is celebrating her birthday today, friday April 21st. She is 80 years old and long may she reign. Her Majesty's official birthday doesn't take place until June. Many wonder why the Queen has two birthdays; the answer is really quite straightforward. The sovereign's birthday is celebrated with much pomp and ceremony in London. If the day were not celebrated during the summer months, the weather might be too inclement for the occasion. The official birthday of the reigning monarch is, therefore, celebrated on either the first or second (or sometimes – as this year – the third) Saturday in June. This year the official birthday takes place on 17th June. Blighty's has chosen to publish its birthday greetings to Her Majesty – in the Orangeville Citizen newpaper - on her actual birthday. Happy Birthday Your Majesty.
