John Cleese is best known as an English actor whose first and enduring claim to fame came from his membership in the Monty Python comedy troupe. But Cleese didn't set out to be an actor. In fact his entry to the acting profession happened almost by chance. In the early 1960s Cleese was studying law at Cambridge University when he joined a university performance group called the Footlights Revue. He travelled to the US with the group and stayed for a year, performing on Broadway before returning to England.
His many film roles since those days are legendary. Three of his performances are less well known but equally hilarious. They are captured in a compilation called simply "The John Cleese Comedy Collection".
How to Irritate People - a master class demonstrating insincerity, inefficiency and all round rude behaviour. Also starring Python team members Graham Chapman and Michael Palin.
The Strange Case of the End of Civilization as We Know It in which Cleese plays a bungling descendant of Sherlock Holmes involved in a drama of international power, politics and intrigue.
Romance With a Double Bass. John Cleese plays alongside his Fawlty Towers co-star Connie Booth in a comedy tale of a musician, played by Cleese, skinny-dipping in a lake unaware that a princess (Connie Booth) is doing the same. A passer-by steals their clothes and the hilarious story follows their attempts to return to the princess's castle.
Classic John Cleese comedy gems in a 3 disc set with a total running time of 160 minutes priced at a surprisingly low $29.95.
